If a downspout ends beside the foundation or drains onto a narrow strip of lawn, that concentrated flow can create mud, erosion, and recurring puddles.

Simple extensions can move water farther from the home, provided they direct it to a safe location that does not affect a neighbor's property or create a new low spot. For a cleaner, more permanent appearance, buried solid drain pipe can carry water to a suitable discharge point.

Catch basins are useful where runoff gathers at the bottom of a driveway, near a patio edge, or at a problem area in the lawn. They collect surface water and route it through pipe. They are not a replacement for correct grading, but they can be an effective part of a complete drainage system when water has a clear route out.

Keep these systems maintained. Leaves, mulch, roof debris, and sediment can clog inlets and reduce performance. A basin that is buried beneath soil or blocked by landscaping may look tidy, but it cannot do its job.

Consider a French Drain for Persistent Underground Water
